Full image - THIS ITEM IS SOLD

Splendid early war quality Waffen-SS officer's Bergmütze, privately made cap having the style, generous cut and insignia placement observed being worn by Waffen-SS mountain units such as Nord and Prinz Eugen, the cap body is constructed of earlier war field grey wools of almost imperceptibly differing shades and has the full top, short brim and other features commonly found in Bergmützen, lining is of grey colored ribbed cotton, the one and only marking is the size stamping which appears to read 57, the cap has a full tan colored leather sweatband that is still quite supple, there is some damage to it at the cap's rear, the flatwire skull and SS eagle are hand sewn with black cotton thread and are well embedded, the wear and slight oxidation are consistent with the cap's condition and neither piece shows sign of having been applied previously, as with early war officer rank Bergmützen there is no crown piping, two tan plastic buttons are sewn to the cap's front with waxed black cotton thread, the brim's internal stiffener is cracked, piece was certainly service worn as sweatband and interior are soiled, externally there is light age and nap wear to the exposed areas, first of this type we have had, USD $5500 SOLD
