Super rare black Panzer wrap for a Heer Panzerpionier Leutnant, early quality wrap made of dense black wool and lined in cement colored ribbed cotton, wrap is stamped with black ink on the inner left chest with size and B40 depot markings, additionally, the wrap is maker marked to the firm Paul Opalla & Co., the internal belt support straps, buttoning tabs and inner waist tie tape tunnels are made of the same material as is the lining, the waist ties are black cloth tapes having an HBT weave, each belt hook position has a single aluminum belt hook, wrap retains its full issue length and there are four large black composite closure buttons, the lapel, closure tab and cuff buttons are the small black composite type and none are missing, an additional black plastic button of civilian origin is sewn next to the upper tab closure button, the broadly pointed second type black wrap collar is piped entirely in a single length of black/silver twist cord applied by hand being knotted and finished underneath at the approximate location of the throat hook and eye, additional lengths of this piping are hand stitched to the outer edges of the Panzer collar patches which are made of he same material as the wrap itself, two parallel lines of straight machine stitching attach each tab to the collar, with the inner line being sewn through the bodies of the tabs while the second line is positioned between tab and piping and which serves to flatten the piping to the collar, each collar patch has a single aluminum Totenkopf held with round brass prongs, the sewn in Pionier Leutnant shoulder boards are secured firmly into the shoulder seams and the issue bridles are removed, at some point a device had been applied to each strap and there are four small prong holes to the upper and lower surface of each strap, the white on black machine woven national emblem is hand sewn and entirely appropriate to a wrap made in 1940, an EKII ribbon is sewn to the first lapel button hole, wrap is sized for a tall individual, although there is little nap wear, there are several moth holes and a wartime darned repair to the lower right outer sleeve, there are holes approximately .5cm or smaller at the inner collar, right upper breast (concealed by lapel), two holes at the right rear sleeve at the elbow, another at the right rear lower cuff plus a larger irregular hole appx. 1cm in length at roughly that same position and, finally, a half dozen 1mm diameter holes at the right lower sleeve above the darned repair, the darned repair is performed by machine and looks to be a typical period repair with black fabric backing to the corresponding inner sleeve, despite the lengthy description, the flaws are not particularly distracting and strong light is needed to see them, striking and attractive example, USD $9500 SOLD
