Incredibly rare SS-VT contract field grey overcoat for an SS-Obercharführer from SS-Regiment Deutschland, constructed from high quality issue field grey wool, having a large collar with outer surface of slightly contracting material closed with an oversized black painted steel hook and eye, being double breasted, with deep turn back cuffs, rear waist belt and a centrally vented unhemmed skirt, the lining and hip pocket bags are fashioned of putty colored ribbed cotton, there is one internal breast pocket, the inner flap is held with a large horn button, the rear skirt is held closed with smaller horn buttons, the front closure and rear waist belt buttons are field grey painted steel, these buttons are stamped W.R. and all are originally sewn, the shoulder strap buttons are the smaller type, the insignia are originally applied and include a machine embroidered SS1 runic and matching rank tab with two silvered zinc rank pips, both have hand sewn metallic aluminum and black twisted edging and are machine applied to the collar, the outer collar edges also have metallic aluminum and black twisted piping, the Waffen-SS style overcoat length shoulder straps are made of black wool panels and have rosa colored wool piping, the metallic NCO Tresse is machine sewn, each strap has a single silvered rank pip with the Roman numeral I and it is thought that this may indicate attachment to a nascent Panzerjäger (or Panzer) sub unit, the shoulder strap ends are inserted into shoulder seams which were left undone and which are bordered by reinforcing stitching adjacent to the straps' borders, a single centrally positioned stitch anchors the shoulder straps to the shoulder seam, the machine embroidered RZM style 'hammerhead' sleeve eagle was applied during the manufacturing process via machine zig zag stitching, sleeves are lined in a light tan colored polished cotton fabric and the eagle's stitching does not, of course, penetrate this lining, the machine embroidered RZM EM gothic Deutschland sleeve band is hand sewn to the left upper cuff, internally the rear shoulder lining has size stampings in black ink, below that is stamped VA 1938 inside a rectangle, the inside of the pocket is stamped (with what is believed to be) the former owner's name and home town, condition of the coat is quite fine, the insignia's thread embroidery has taken on a slight yellow cast, there is faint soiling to the lining from service wear, the collar edges are a bit worn, and there are small moth holes to the rear lower hem, first coat of this type we have handled, from the estate of a deceased collector who owned the coat for several decades, it will include a COA from the previous seller, amazing item, USD $20.000
