VirtualGrenadier is a non-political informational and commercial web site devoted to documenting the appearance of the German soldier 1939-1945 through the use of period photographs, by showcasing examples from private collections, and by offering original examples for sale. The site is intended for use by researchers, archivists and collectors of historical military memorabilia. This site carries no affiliation whatsoever with any political ideology. Set of service blouse, helmet, award and documents for a Oberarzt who served with Luftwaffe mobile hospital units, from the estate of Dr. Joachim Achilles, consignor research states subject was in Crimea, southern Russia, Hungary, and Romania and that his unit worked at the front between airports and was also involved in the recovery of crashed aircrew, four original photos of D.r Achilles are included with the lot, there is a strong probability that three of the photos show the doctor wearing the service blouse included, the group photo of three is dated May ’44 in Crimea and names the other soldiers on the reverse, the group photo of four was made in Romania, the bareheaded portrait photo was made in Hungary in Feb. '45, the larger postcard sized photo shows the doctor wearing Luftwaffe officer’s M43 cap with trapezoid shaped insigne and Waffen-SS camouflaged parka, included also is a large article cut from a wartime newspaper entitled Schutz Gegen Tiefangriffe, additionally there is a clipping of an attractive woman with a penned dedication made in Crimea and dated April 1944, plus a 1990 dated letter related to a property manner; a 1939 EKI is also included, it is is slightly vaulted, unmarked, and shows slight service wear; the service blouse is a standard issue Luftwaffe Waffenrock modified for wear by an officer, it is made of blue grey colored issue wool, has an open collar which may be fastened with a tab, button, hook and eye, it has a four button front, four pleated patch pockets, turn back cuffs and skirt is vented, it is lined with and has belt hook support straps and bandage pocket of grey colored ribbed cotton, there is one internal pocket and the lining is stamped with maker information, sizes and LBA39 date, sections of the lower lining have patched repairs, a dagger hanger was suspended from the left armpit area and the chest was padded, all buttons are of pebbled silver alloy, the lower edge of the collar has twisted aluminum cording, the Oberleutnant equivalent rank collar patches are hand stitched, the slip on shoulder boards’ tongues are threaded through narrow bridles added for this purpose, each shoulder board has gilt devices, the hand embroidered in aluminum wires national emblem is hand sewn, two place bar has Ostmedaille and Romanian Anti-Communism Medal ribbons, there are loops for the EKI, garment with light wear and soiling plus some oxidation to the collar patch embroidery, there are no holes or external repairs; the accompanying M35 camouflaged helmet has Dr. Achilles’ name painted in red to the rear inner skirt, further, his name with the date 23.4.1944 is penned to the leather liner, liner is stamped size 58 and still has its drawstring, the full length leather chinstrap is maker marked, having zinc liner bands, split pins and washers are tight and have not been altered, there is significant dust, spider webs, etc, between liner and bands, externally the smooth Luftwaffe blue grey factory finish was overpainted by hand in a rough textured tan color with sand mixed in, the Luftwaffe eagle decal is overpainted, there is no outline for the national colors decal, there are a few scrapes and gouges to the paint, coverage is estimated to exceed 90%, interesting group that warrants further study, USD $6750 NEW PRICE
